Sketches of Spain – Miles Davis (1960)

Sketches of Spain - Miles Davis (1960)

I love Kind Of Blue, and Miles Davis’ follow up Sketches Of Spain, is just as good. What started off as a normal jazz album with one jazz version of a classical Spanish composition turned into this interesting mixture of jazz and classical music. I can’t really call this “fresh” or “new” seeing how the album is 54 years old, but I but it was “fresh” and “new” in 1960. Considering  that Kind of Blue had came out only 11 months earlier, this was a huge stylistic change for Miles. Although, Miles wouldn’t be Miles if he stayed the same.

In The Court Of The Crimson King- King Crimson (1969)

In The Court Of The Crimson King- King Crimson (1969)

ITCOTCK  is sort of a one hit wonder, but in album format instead of single format. To be fair to King Crimson, I’ve only listened to two of their other albums, but the rest of their stuff doesn’t seem to come close to ITCOTCK. That’s kind of why of why ITCOTCK is so amazing. The lineup that they had when they recorded ITCOTCK had some sort of chemistry that no other lineup could really come close to. ITCOTCK is a progressive rock masterpiece one hit wonder, but I couldn’t tell you an exact reason why.

Good Kid, M.A.A.D City – Kendrick Lamar (2012)

Good Kid, M.A.A.D City - Kendrick Lamar (2012)

Although my comments about Kendrick Lamar may have given off a vibe that I don’t like his work, I actually really enjoy his work. Good Kid M.A.A.D. City, while a gangsta rap album, is more complex then whatever passes for gangsta rap these days. Yeah, there’s the bangers like Backseat Freestyle, but there’s also songs like Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst which is the complete opposite of a banger. Kendrick Lamar knows how to make an album that is just more than some gangbanger nonsense, which is unusual in gangsta rap these days.

Graduation – Kanye West (2007)

Graduation - Kanye West (2007)

Kanye West toured with U2 at one point. Inspired by U2’s ability to lead arena crowds in song, Kanye decided that he wanted to make hip-hop music that could inspire arena crowds to do the same. The result of this decision was Graduation, which takes a more electronic vibe than Kanye’s previous two efforts. Graduation is pretty unique due to Kanye’s ambitions. I don’t think an arena crowd has the ability to rap an entire song along with Kanye, but for some reason this album makes me feel like I could. The flow isn’t new, but his beats certainly are.

Immunity – Jon Hopkins (2013)

Immunity - Jon Hopkins (2013)

There’s a certain beauty in listening to ambient music.  While I love my bangers, sometimes it is just nice to relax. Immunity does a perfect job at being that music to relax to. It’s soothing, and calming, and all the technical mastery is there to go along with it. There’s a feeling that Jon Hopkins could produce some killer songs to party to, but he chooses not to. Jon Hopkins has produced this beautiful electronic ambient album instead, and there isn’t a reason to complain about his choice to do so.

pom pom – Ariel Pink (2014)

pom pom - Ariel Pink (2014)

Ariel Pink does an amazing job at harkening back to the days of Frank Zappa, lo-fi, and new wave all while keeping pom pom new and exciting. Not that Zappa, lo-fi, or new wave aren’t exciting to begin with, but those styles kind of get old after awhile. Maybe it’s the synthesis of these genres, or maybe it’s just how weird this album is, but whatever it is pom pom is most definitely worth a listen.

Our Love – Caribou (2014)

Our Love - Caribou (2014)

You know those science fiction movies where people walk into the bar, and everyone is dancing really slow to slow music? That’s what One Love reminds me of.  The music slowly builds up and becomes more complex, just like a slow club dance style would. On top of this relaxing music, there’s also some nice smooth vocals to top it all off. If I could, I’d let these vocals take me home from the club  When these vocals and I got home, these vocals would make passionate love to me, just like it does on this album.
