Pyromania – Def Leppard (1983)

Late Registration - Kanye West (2004)

When it comes to favorite albums of all time, Pyromania will always be near the top for me. This is a case of an album that has nearly everything going for it. Elements of glam metal are present in songs such as Rock of Ages and Photograph, where songs like Rock! Rock! (Till You Drop) simply rock hard like no other. Pyromania is like the poster-child for what every 80’s glam rock album should have been: glam elements exist but are only present when needed and the rock elements fill in the rest of the gaps. This album rocks hard, and it isn’t afraid to show it.

Torches – Foster the People (2011)

Torches - Foster the People (2011)

When I first heard my friends raving about Foster the People, I assumed they were just another no-name pop group that would pass in a couple years. Still, I checked out the album Torches just to see if I was right and I couldn’t believe how wrong I had been. The album nothing short of blew me away with how different it was from so many other popular albums of the year. Songs such as Pumped up Kicks, Call It What You Want and Don’t Stop (Color on the Walls) were incredibly easy to get into, and I can guarantee that anyone will find songs they enjoy on this album.

Fire – Electric Six (2003)

Fire - Electric Six (2003)

After first hearing Danger! High Voltage! for the first time, I wasn’t sure what I’d just heard. All I knew was that I wanted more of it. The first place I looked was its original album, Fire, and I didn’t have to go much farther than that. Fire is an album that is fun, hard rocking, and different all at the same time. There are songs that are goofy or funny and there are songs that have a more serious rock feel to them. The way all the songs blend the elements of hard rock and comedy rock produces an album that is a crime to miss out on.

Brandon’s Note: This is the first album all of us really wanted to write about…to the point of argument. So definitely pick it up.

Visitors – Lazerhawk (2012)

Visitors - Lazerhawk (2012)

If there ever was an album from this decade that should have been released back in the 80’s, it is Lazerhawk’s Visitors. The sound of Visitors is something that really sets it apart from all other albums released in 2012. The album is produced and orchestrated so that it sounds like 80’s pop songs with a taste of new elements added to it. The album is an experience from the epic Lazerhawk’s Theme to the intense title track to the beautiful So Far Away. Visitors is not an album you can miss out on.

Black Sun – Gold Fields (2013)

Black Sun - Gold Fields (2013)

The synthpop sub-genre had intrigued me for a while so I decided to expand my tastes. I found the album Black Sun through an iTunes recommendation and I was pleasantly surprised by the result. Throughout the album lie many strong points such as Dark Again, Treehouse, and You’re Still Gone. People looking for a break from their normal tastes in music will be able to find enjoyment in Black Sun, as I did. The album covers material from pop to alternative rock and is incredibly easy to get into.

Frontiers – Journey (1983)

Frontiers - Journey (1983)

I saw the CD for Frontiers in a music store one day and decided to pick it up. What resulted did nothing short of change my life. After listening to the album in its entirety, I felt like I’d been missing out on something my whole life. To say that Frontiers is an amazing album is an understatement. Everyone needs to listen to this album at least once. Frontiers is, in my opinion, a perfect blend of all the styles of Journey. From the heavy riffs of Separate Ways to the ballad verses of Send Her my Love, the album doesn’t have a single weak point.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix – Phoenix (2009)

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix (2009)

When I first heard 1901, it was unlike anything I’d ever listened to before. I caught onto the song quickly and decided to listen to the album it came from. After giving Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix a few listens, I was hooked on the entire album, and it opened the door for me to alternative rock in general. Many things are done on Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix that simply can’t be found on any other album. The vocals are mixed perfectly with the instrumentals on all tracks and elements of alternative rock and synthpop are blended to make Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix a true one-of-a-kind album.
