Channel Orange – Frank Ocean (2012)

Channel Orange - Frank Ocean (2012)

When I first heard of Frank Ocean, I thought that he could not be anything special.  I thought Frank Ocean was just another artist who would be forgotten in a few years.  Then I listened to Channel Orange.  This album is fantastic.  One of the essentials of modern music.  Frank Ocean’s voice and production are just majestic.  This album are filled with soul that Frank Ocean’s contemporaries cannot match.  Some people may disagree, but I think Channel Orange  is going to become the quintessential album of modern soul and R&B music.

If you are new to R&B and looking for easy starting points, this album should be added to your list. I was new to R&B when I first listened, and I had no problem getting into the songs on this album. The album starts off very strong with two of my favorite R&B songs of all time, “Serpentine Fire” and “Fantasy”. All ‘n All is an album of many strengths, and the elements of R&B, soul, jazz, and funk shine through beautifully to create a masterpiece in the R&B catalogue.

St. Elsewhere moves at a breakneck pace. There are fourteen killer tracks packed like sardines in just 37 minutes, mixed together with Danger Mouse‘s slick production wizardry. There’s no skippers here – rare even for my favorite albums. I chose this first because it’s so diverse, something we really want to promote on this blog. Clever rap verses, gospel vocals, multifaceted beats, and psychedelia are blended together like spices in a well-made dish: disparate parts and strange combinations somehow ending as a satisfying final product. Some people may call it Crazy, but I’d say they’ve got their share of Feng Shui.
